WORKBOOK DESIGN: Health Leaders Program
I came upon this project quite seredipitously. When I was at a Women In Science panel talk at the Field Museum in Chicago, I met Dr. Ruchi Gupta, a pediatrician from Northwestern who focused on allergies and asthma. She talked about how she was about to launch a workshop series to empower high school students that are interested in healthcare in their community to pursue community interventions.
Naturally, I was more than interested in getting involved.
A couple discussions, phone calls, emails, and weeks later, I was so excited to officially be part of the project! Not only would I be creating the workbook for students to work out of for all 4 of the workshops, I would also be helping out in the workshop. But more on the latter part in a bit.
This workbook would include journal prompts, homework assignments (and space to complete them), as well as inspirational quotes, workshop programs, a place for reflection. I really wanted to create something that would be welcoming to the students without being too childish (they are in high school). I decided to go with the Northwestern purple for the whole book, a rich royal purple that can stand alone. The book uses bold numbers for clarity of the objectives of the workshop. It also utilizes a lot of white space to allow for thinking and creativity.
Stay tuned for more updates on how the students creatively tackle health problems!
